Leenders Baviaan

Baviaan White Blend

A blend of Chenin Blanc, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, this white blend is a South African take on a typical Rhône white blend.

Complex, rich and finessed.

The Chenin Blanc (South Africa’s most planted grape) lends a crisp acidity and fruit-forward note to the wine, while Roussanne and Grenache Blanc brings a typical aromatic note, waxy complexity and finesse to the blend.

Light yellow in colour with peach, apricot and stone fruit on the nose. This wine is great now, but is made to age for 5 years or more.

The mischievous Baviaan (Dutch for Baboon) is a common site in the Cape Winelands and incidentally has been for ages.

During Wijnand Leenders’ tenure at the Company’s Gradens he realised that the fresh fruit, vegetables and some other produce was disappearing from the gardens.

After first suspecting company soldiers, local tribes and then the slaves from the lodge nearby, he was to eventually discover that it was a troop of the local Baviaan!
